Today we welcome the Willows to the Riverside for our first encounter for three years. We last played WLW on 23 Dec 2023, where two goals from Jarid Robson and one from Tanner Call saw us prevail by three goals to one, the Walsham reply coming through Charlie Norman. Today, we have Ryan Dunne in goal who played in that match for Walsham and I expect Walsham will field Tommy Robinson, who played for Mildenhall in that fixture. I must congratulate Walsham Le Willows for embarking on their 20th consecutive season in the Eastern Counties Premier League. With the way clubs move up and down these days, that really is some feat, and no other club in the league comes close to that length of time in one division. We have played Walsham 32 times in that period, 16 out of 20 seasons, having spent 4 seasons in the Isthmian League. Speaking of the Isthmian League, I would like to extend a heart welcome to Roger Reed, the President of the Isthmian League, who is presenting the club with the Respect award from last season in that league. I personally am not in favour of the respect table, as we got hammered the season before with a over a thousand pounds of penalties, for offences deemed to be disrespect to the officials. Still, with Mildenhall’s greatest ever signing captaining that side, I was not surprised. So well done to last years team, you refrained from giving the officials your opinions, and we got something out of what was in reality, a pretty shoddy season. Well, what an exciting start to the season, an enthralling 3-3 draw at Yarmouth last Saturday was followed up by a magnificent 4-1 victory over Haverhill Rovers last Tuesday. Unfortunately, I missed it due to other commitments (moving and an important birthday) but by all accounts, it was the most exciting match here for a long time, and to beat Haverhill at all is commendable, so to win by such a margin really sets us up for a good season. The buzz seems to be back at Mildenhall, it had been missing for a while, but it is back. So, lets get behind the team, we had a crowd of 240, so lets keep on coming, try and get over 200 every game. It really does make everybody feel the effort is worth it, when people turn up in numbers to watch the football. Let’s be honest, what is there better to do really? We are really making an effort to reset this club into a sustainable vehicle going forward. The EJA setup is growing, the youth set up is growing, the U18s are back, and the first team is doing the club proud…Now we need you to do your part. (I know you do already of course for which we are extremely thankful). Let’s look for another exciting game today, no matter the result, and just enjoy it.

Tonight we welcome Haverhill Rovers to the Riverside Stadium for their first visit since August 2022, when Hall held sway by 4 goals to 2, coutersey of a George Bugg hat trick, and one from Tanner Call. Rhyse Hudson and Kade Ivatt were Rover’s scorers. Both clubs have gone sperate paths since, ourselves getting promoted a season later, and then after two years in the Isthmian League, we are back in the Thurlow Nunn league, and Rovers were actually relegated that season, bouncing back in 24/25 before finishing runners up to runaway champions Mulbarton Rovers, and falling to Fakenham in the playoffs. So here we are, reviving a regular league fixture between two Suffok clubs again. Did Rovers miss their chance last season, who knows. From what I have seen, March, Soham and Thetford will be contenders, and this season looks to be much tougher than last season. Good! We want a strong league. Non league football (if that is not a misnomer, I don’t know what is) is brilliant, and this promises to be a brilliant season. We need something to bring us some relief from the crazy stuff going on around us. As for Mildenhall, we have had to rebuild a whole new team in a matter of 8 weeks, following relegation last season, and the mass exodus of all bar one of the players who comprised the relegated team. I wish all of the departing players the best wishes, and hope that they enjoyed their time at the Hall. Players left for various reasons, and to be honest, we needed to start with a clean slate. We have two young ambitious men as our new joint managers, Ben Mayhew and Alex Rossis, both goalkeepers as it happens, and now, having watched a few of their training sessions, I am confident that the team will become an effective unit in this league, and we can start looking forward again. The management team are extremely committed to this rebuild. Our first match was three days ago, away at Great Yarmouth, and all I can say is was one of the best away days for a very long time. There was a lovely holiday atmosphere at the Wellesley, and the whole club seems to be in a good place now. As it happens, the match ended all square 3-3, which in my opinion was the least we deserved from our endeavours. I will single out Ross Bailey who was absolutely terrific in midfield, and was very unfortunate to get a second booking and thus a dismissal, in the last action of the contest. I am not one to complain about referees, we would be lost without them, but sometimes they seem not to understand the emotional side of the game, especially at critical moments in matches. Without emotion, caring if we win or lose, the game is pointless. I assume Ross got carded for saying something to the referee after Yarmouth scrambled their equaliser in the 12th minute of time added on, which obviously would have brought frustration to the him and the team, especially as they had really bossed the second half. It’s not a criticism of anybody, just my opinion on how things happen. As I said, players and the fans are emotionally involved in the game, as it is like a drama, simple as that, and sometimes feelings manifest themselves in words , no more , no less. Despite the obvious frustration concending very late on (about 10 past 5), it really was a promsing start to the new season, and there were plenty of bright moments in this match, none more so than the two goals from U18 player Cameron Hynes, who looks to be one of those natural players to me. Remember, this was only the first step on The road back for us, and it was certainly a positive. So let’s hope for a good one tonight, and lets get back into the swing of things here, come as much as you can, embrace the league, embrace the camararderie, this is still a great club, and this promises to be a fun season again. Fun, yes, something that was missing for a while. Enjoy it for what it is, real football, played by real players for real fans.

There is nothing quite like fixture release day. The dates go straight into the diary, away-day plans start taking shape, and the countdown to another season of football begins. Mildenhall Town's 2026/27 Eastern Counties Premier Division campaign gets underway with a trip to Great Yarmouth Town on 25 July, before The Hall return to Recreation Way for the first home game of the season against Haverhill Rovers on 28 July. Walsham le Willows are then the visitors on 1 August, bringing an early test on home soil before attention turns to the cup competitions. August promises to be a busy and exciting month. An FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie away at Harwich & Parkeston is followed by the league visit of Walsham le Willows, before trips to Ely City and home meetings with Ipswich Wanderers round off the month. With league points and cup progression both on the line, supporters will have plenty to look forward to from the opening weeks of the campaign. September sees league action continue with fixtures against Wisbech Town, Downham Town and Dereham Town, setting up a challenging autumn schedule. October is packed with attractive contests as Lakenheath, Kirkley & Pakefield and March Town United all visit Recreation Way, while away trips to Brantham Athletic and Soham Town Rangers provide two difficult tests on the road. As the nights draw in, November brings local interest with meetings against Ely City, Walsham le Willows, Cornard United, Downham Town and Woodbridge Town. The festive period follows with matches against Harleston Town, Ipswich Wanderers and a Boxing Week clash at home to Thetford Town, one of the standout fixtures of the season. The New Year begins with away trips to Woodbridge Town and Haverhill Rovers before home encounters against Brantham Athletic and Dereham Town. February is another demanding month with fixtures against Stowmarket Town, Lakenheath, Wisbech Town, March Town United and the return fixture against Great Yarmouth Town. As the season reaches its climax, March sees The Hall welcome Stowmarket Town and Soham Town Rangers, whilst travelling to Kirkley & Pakefield and local rivals Thetford Town over the Easter period. The league campaign is then scheduled to conclude in April with a trip to Harleston Town before the final home fixture of the season against Heacham at Recreation Way on 17 April. Thirty-eight league fixtures, FA Cup and FA Vase football, local derbies, festive football and a season finale on home turf – the 2026/27 campaign has all the ingredients for another memorable year for Mildenhall Town.
